A Star Is Born - Little Red Feather Race Recap (01.21.20)
Posted by Billy Koch on January 21, 2020
Four LRF runners took center stage at Santa Anita this week. While neither of our stakes runners found glory, a newly turned 3yo filly turned in an eye-catching victory that stamped her as one to watch.
On Friday afternoon at Santa Anita, COMMANDER (FR) (above) was still searching for his first U.S. victory for trainer Phil D'Amato. Ridden by Abel Cedillo, Commander was sent off as the second choice in a small field of starter allowance/optional claiming $40k types. Commander received a perfect stalking trip and looked as if he was heading for victory before pace-setter Brickyard Ride ducked out forcing Commander to check hard and lose all momentum. The 3yo Euro import had to settle for second money and was claimed out of the race. As always, we wish his new connections well.
On Saturday afternoon at Santa Anita, THE HUNTED (above) attempted to win a race named after his sire in the $200,000 Unusual Heat Turf Classic. With Tiago Periera aboard for trainer Richie Baltas, The Hunted came into this race off a dominant victory against second condition allowance runners but was caught behind a slow pace and never found his best stride. The Hunted finished sixth behind wire to wire winner, Wound Tight, and continued his winless streak at the mile and an eighth distance (video below).
The Hunted earned another $6,000 for his effort, moving his lifetime earnings to $236,514 for a partnership that includes breeder Madeline Auerbach, Ciagla Racing, and Nathan McCauley. Look for the 5yo CA Bred to return to stakes company in February/March at Santa Anita.
LRF had high hopes for BEGUILED (above) when she made her career debut last fall at Del Mar. Unfortunately, nothing went right that day and Beguiled did not threaten. The 3yo filly by Kentucky Derby winner Orb came back to work very well since the race and trainer Phil D'Amato decided to stretch her out to two turns on Monday in her 2020 debut. Beguiled proved she was no morning glory and destroyed a good group of maiden allowance fillies at Santa Anita.
Sent off as the third choice in the wagering and ridden by Drayden Van Dyke, Beguiled broke much better yesterday, settled just behind the leaders while saving ground around the clubhouse turn, shifted off the rail around the turn for home and exploded late to win going away by over three lengths (video replay).
"She's still learning," DVD said after the race. "What she did today was on talent alone. We've got some work to do but she has the chance to be special."
We hope DVD is right. Beguiled is a half sister to LRF's GI winner, Fault, who captured graded stakes races on dirt on turf for D'Amato. Could this be another star in the making for LRF? Stay tuned!
Later on the holiday Monday card at Santa Anita, SUPER PATRIOT (above) claimed last summer for $35,000, made her 2020 debut in the GIII $100,000 Megahertz Stakes. Sent off as the 5/2 second choice and ridden for the first time by Joel Rosario, the daughter of Unusual Heat ran her race and made a bold move down the lane but could not catch winner Carressa in the final strides (video replay).
Since the claim, Super Patriot has now run five races for LRF and has two wins, two seconds, and a third. She is now Graded Stakes Placed and, as trainer Richie Baltas said after the race, "she will win one of these stakes races soon!"
Finally, LRF has made it's first private purchase of 2020, acquiring talented Irish bred 3yo Mecklenburg (IRE) (below). Limited shares remain in this colt, who was an impressive winner of his 2020 campaign at Dundalk receiving a 78p Timeform rating in the process (race replay).
