Close But No Cigar - Little Red Feather Race Recap (01.13.20)

RIP CITY 1.1.20 ti400267

It looked for a second like Little Red Feather Racing would continue its torrid streak through another weekend as Velvet Queen and My Boy Tate were both well fancied in their respective 2020 debuts. Unfortunately, neither horse found the winners' circle.
Velvet Queen 2
On Friday afternoon at Santa Anita,  VELVET QUEEN (above) tried to make it three straight victories for trainer Richie Baltas. The 4yo Animal Kingdom filly took command from the start for Rafael Bejarano and turned in a thrilling stretch dual with second choice, Persepolis (pink cap), before just coming up short (video replay). Velvet Queen earned a 75 Beyer Speed Figure for her second place effort and lifted her career earnings to $106,262. Owned in partnership with BG Stables, Velvet Queen will likely return in a first condition allowance race on dirt or turf in mid-February.
On Saturday afternoon at Aqueduct Race Course in New York, MY BOY TATE (above) tried to win the $100,000 Say Florida Sandy Stakes for NY Breds for a second time. In fact, trainer Michelle Nevin was going for her third straight Say Florida Sandy win. However, on a day where speed was all the rage, My Boy Tate, sent off as the 2-1 second choice with regular rider Manny Franco in the irons, broke a step slowly and was squeezed at the start. The poor start combined with the speed favoring track left Tate way too much to do and he checked in a well beaten fifth (video below).
My Boy Tate, who earned an 86 BSF, had dominated at Aqueduct, winning four straight races and two stakes back in 2017-2018. He will get another chance at NY Bred stakes competition when he returns in the $100,000 Hollie Hughes Stakes on February 17.
LRF has a big holiday weekend on tap at Santa Anita led by two stakes runners. The Hunted takes on CA Breds in the $200,000 Unusual Heat Turf Classic on Saturday and Super Patriot makes her graded stakes debut in the GIII $100,000 Megahertz Stakes on Monday.
Finally, LRF has made it's first private purchase of 2020, acquiring talented Irish bred 3yo Mecklenburg (IRE) (below). This colt was an impressive winner of his 2020 campaign at Dundalk receiving a 78p Timeform rating in the process (race replay).
