With nearly $25 million in added purses and incentives paid in 2014, owning a California bred thoroughbred horse ("CA Bred") has never been more financially beneficial to those who own on their own or are in thoroughbred partnerships. It is considered one of the biggest advantages in all of horse racing in the United States.

Don't believe us?

At Del Mar in 2015, you could earn $115,660 in earnings by just winning two entry level races running against CA BREDS ONLY (ie CA Bred maiden allowance and CA Bred allowance).  Even better, the average sales price for a 2YO at the 2015 Barrett's May Sale was $45,641.

Here are a few highlights of the CA Bred owner program:

1. A $17,500 automatic bonus for breaking your maiden at the allowance level (with no deductions to the trainer and jockey).

2. Your own maiden allowance race restricted to CA Breds.

3. Your own CA Bred allowance race before needing to race against open (ie horses from other states) company.

4. Your very own stakes series restricted to CA Breds. In 2015, there are 37 stakes totaling over $5.5 million in purses.

5. Automatic 30% Purse Bonus in Southern California when racing against open company. Thus, when you clear the CA Bred allowance condition, you run for $97,500 in the first condition allowance race (instead of $75,000) at Del Mar.

6. Up to $165,000 in added bonuses for winning a graded stakes race outside of California.

If there was a drawback, some owners historically thought CA Breds were "not as good" as Kentucky breds. When California Chrome - a CA Bred by sire Lucky Pulpit - won the 2014 Kentucky Derby, that perception changed drastically. Other CA Bred horses that have also made a splash on the national scene recently include Acclimation, Amazombie and the Usual Q.T.

Little Red Feather Racing has raced 13 CA Breds, with 10 earning over $100,000 in purses. Whether you own on your own or involved in thoroughbred partnerships, racing a CA Bred is a sizable financial advantage and a program CA owners should continue to support and grow.
